Meritus Medical Center is a 510,000 SF regional medical center providing care to a population well beyond its immediate environs. The five-story medical center is located on a 30-acre site in semi-rural Western Maryland. Attached to an existing 300,000 SF Medical Mall, the facility provides inpatient, outpatient and hospital-based services in a complementary relationship. The 267 private beds include: 149 Medical/Surgical, 24 ICU/ CCU, 28 Progressive Care, 8 Pediatrics, 20 Rehab, 20 LDRP’s and 18 Behavioral Health. Additionally, there are Inpatient Rehab facilities, 10 station Level 2+ Special Care Nursery and facility wide telemetry and infrastructure to continue the transition to fully digital medical records. A unique approach to programming and planning, which included stakeholders at all levels of the organization, yielded a savings of 110 FTE’s and a sizable increase in direct nursing contact on the day the facility opened. The main lobby is the central organizing space for the entire campus and provides an authentic sense of place for patients, visitors and staff. An artful use of natural lighting, materials, and the prudent design of a two-story space, connects the dining room and outdoor gardens to create a visual imprint that guides wayfinding throughout the facility.
