Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Linear Accelerator addition and renovation supports increased patient volume

BARRINGTON, IL—Last month Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital completed a year-long project to create an additional radiation oncology vault and upgrade the existing facility and equipment. In addition to a new linear accelerator and vault, the control room and access for the existing facility were upgraded. The project continues a 20-year working relationship between M&CA and Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital that includes the original Radiation Oncology Center design in 1995 and a modernization and linear accelerator equipment replacement in 2007. To reduce the building footprint and construction cost of the new vault, a direct entry shielded door was utilized eliminating the need for the typical maze. This automatic bi-parting door that looks much like an elevator door allows access to the room in seconds, increasing patient safety. All custom patient apparatuses are stored in perimeter full-height cabinets to preserve patient privacy and a decorative telescoping screen wall at the rear of the vault provides an aesthetically pleasing focal point while concealing additional equipment. M&CA worked closely with the team, including the Owner, Consultants, Contractor and Subcontractors to create a space that can keep up with the volume of patients and the clinician’s needs.
