McDonough District Hospital builds new Retail Pharmacy

MACOMB, IL– Countless rural healthcare institutions suffered long lasting effects from the COVID-19 Pandemic, but McDonough District Hospital chose to use the lessons learned from opening a drive-thru testing clinic as a springboard to provide more convenient services for patients. Since the majority of physician practices treating patients at MDH are located in the onsite medical office buildings, why not offer a drive-thru experience for all of the patient prescription needs before they leave the campus.

The new Retail Rx facility will operate as a full-service clinical pharmacy working directly with patients and providers to provide the best care coordination possible. Patients can utilize the enclosed, climate-controlled drive-thru to pick up their medications or walk inside during business hours, all before leaving the MDH campus from their medical appointment. The Ground Floor accommodates the drive-thru garage, walk-in lobby with transaction counters, and all the required pharmaceutical prep and support space. The pharmacy will also offer delivery and mail order service options for distributing medication to patients not able to visit the facility. The Lower Level incorporates storage space and houses mechanical systems to support the building.

Vernacular building forms with sloped roofs help create a highly identifiable structure which is easily accessibly on campus. Exterior material selections echo the MDH aesthetic and complement the overall character of the institution. Interior finishes include warm tones and nature inspired color ways to bring warmth to the space and comfort to the users and staff.

McDonough District Hospital has been a source of healing, caring, and hope since they opened their doors to the people of western Illinois in 1958. MDH is a 48-bed health care facility providing an impressive spectrum of advanced medical treatments and personalized health services. MDH is accredited by The Joint Commission and is a member of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association. McDonough District Hospital earned its third consecutive “A” Grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group. This national distinction for Fall 2022 celebrates MDH’s achievements in protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and error. MDH was part of the 29 percent nationally earning an “A” grade in Fall 2022.
